Are you exhausted after a day of Zoom/video meetings? Recent articles published by Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Psychology Today, USA Today, BBC and many others all describe this fatigue. You aren’t just imaging that you are tired, you are! The brain experiences fatigue much more rapidly because of the continual eye-eye contact and intense visual stimuli. In normal face-to-face conversations, one doesn’t stare at the other people, but typically relax as they talk, In addition to staring during the video call, our minds are also busy thinking about how we look on camera, other people’s backgrounds, more visual stimuli, and distractions at home. Boom! It’s a lot to process, particularly with a day of back-to-back meetings, perhaps followed by social gatherings.
